This past weekend I had the distinct honor and pleasure of performing a re-committment ceremony for a lovely couple celebrating their 10th anniversary. In Celebrant style, the ceremony told their unique love story, from first meeting, to proposal, to a re-cap of the past decade. They re-affirmed the vows they made to one another and reflected on the meaning and treasure of a marriage of this depth and length.
Why re-commit? I'm sure there are as many reasons for re-committing as for committing in the first place! A lot can happen in 10 years -- births, deaths, job changes, moves, etc. Couples grow together and are different people individually than they were 10 years ago. What a wonderful time to pause and reflect on the distance traveled; to take a rest at the trails bend and look back at the beautiful yet sometimes challenging trail. What a wonderful time to look ahead to the peaks and valleys of the trail ahead of you and say YES! I am so glad to be with this person. I am more sure now than even 10 years ago that you are the person I was meant to be with and I am so grateful. A decade is a perfect time for reflecting and reaffirming.
Oh the richness that can be felt in the relationship to treat it so kindly, so sweetly, as a young lover...I choose you, again, and declare that before all our friends. It was special for me to share in this time with them. I felt invited into their world to be their voice and share their story.
To many many happily ever afters.
