I believe in finding something to celebrate everyday. Our lives are not merely made up of our 'to do' lists, going to and from work, or performing chores mindlessly. Our lives are made up of tiny tasks, undertaken with an attitude of celebration, which break up the mundane and give value and meaning to who we are and what we are doing with our lives.
This picture of California's capital was taken while on a lunchtime walk, a way that I find celebration in what can sometimes be a long day filled with tasks undertaken at a computer. Sometimes I use my walk time to catalog what I'm celebrating, such as blue sky, gorgeous weather, flowers, interesting people on the street, health, freedom.
Today, in New York, another celebration is underway -- as today is the first day that same-sex marriage is legal in New York state. Couples lined up at City Hall in order to be married today by a judge (volunteering his/her services on a Sunday). Clearly celebration is in the air as couples, many who have been together for decades, can finally be recognized in the way they wish and not feel somehow "less than" heterosexual couples. I celebrate along with these couples and feel honored to be part of the Celebrant community. Many of my colleagues are Celebrants in the state of New York who are there today showing their support and are available to perform ceremonies.
I believe in the right of all people who love each other to marry. I look forward to that right someday being available to California couples. I believe that all couples who marry are entitled to exactly the kind of ceremony they want, with their personal love story at the heart of the ceremony.
I believe in celebrating every day. What are you celebrating today?
