Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time. ~John Lubbock
It is now officially summer and what a feeling of freedom this brings. Don’t you find you look forward to the ‘lazy hazy’ days of summer, that ‘summertime and the livin’ is easy’ feeling? That ‘school’s out for summer’ fun mode? I know I love and relish it.
We sure need this downtime in our lives and sometimes even that permission to play. Just the idea of being on vacation can evoke that sense of freedom and play, even if it’s only a long weekend a couple hour’s drive from your house. You know that ‘oh let’s have ice cream, we’re on vacation!’ feeling?
As a Celebrant doing lots of weddings this summer (and into the fall), my schedule is pretty packed, but I have managed to plan several long weekends for myself and this seems to be the summer of festivals for me!
In a few weeks time I’ll be in Grass Valley at the World Music Festival, a yearly tradition for my buddy Joanie and I. Every year we look forward to new music and bands from far away lands, as well as the thrill of a return band we love. Following that I’ll be relishing a long weekend at Wanderlust Festival in Squaw Valley. This will be my first time there and I’m nervous and excited about the new experience. For three days I’ll be enjoying yoga classes, hikes, lectures and music everyday. I’m worried I should have been in training to do so much yoga, but I think pushing myself a bit while there will be a good thing. I know I will enjoy my personal growth, the physical stretch, and leisure time during this festival.
Of course there will be Celebrations in the form of weddings sprinkled throughout. This is a big reason that I do this work: namely the amount of joy I receive from meeting with and collaborating with couples to create a ceremony that positively sings their song. What a gift and honor to be chosen to help a couple create something so personal and to have the pleasure of being at so many gorgeous weddings meeting the nicest people! My list of weddings includes some out of town, including Lake Tahoe which is always a serene and spiritual experience, and this wedding promises to be just that.
Come September I have one more festival, well more of a retreat - Art Is You in Petaluma. With this 3 day retreat, with my choice of workshops, I feel I have rounded out my summer with all senses involved - music, hiking in nature, yoga, travel, art, companionship, and heart-full connections. Interspersed within will be gorgeous colorful fresh fruits and veggies, days of sunshine, bike rides, skipping with my grandson and eating coconut milk ice cream right out of the carton.
What’s on your summer Agenda? What summertime rituals and ceremonies do you love? I challenge you to involve all your senses and personal pleasures this summer and to consider yourself, no matter what you are doing, on vacation.
A life without love is like a year without summer. ~Swedish Proverb
